Skills & Interests
I have worked with pupils from a variety of backgrounds from levels S1 to S4, acquired efficient lesson planning skills, worked collaboratively with staff in the lesson planning and assessment processes, took part in school field trips and departmental meetings. I have gained proficiency using ICT in the classroom, made effective use of self prepared resources, established effective classroom management techniques, became involved with the Eco Schools club, took part in inservice training and whole school curriculum planning for implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. I am certified to teach English as a Second Language and in doing so I have been introduced to a variety of new educational concepts including interactive language teaching, how to teach oral communication skills, creative ways to incorporate English grammar in a classroom setting, teaching in a multicultural setting, and making effective use of ESL teaching materials and resources. Through my volunteer work with the Para-Olympic Sports Association in Edmonton Alberta I have gained the ability to adapt individual specific abilities to meet certain swimming standards, maintaining an encouraging demeanor when a child encounters a mental or physical challenge. Volunteering for Students for Literacy gave me the ability to break down the phonetics of the english language, explain sentence structure and word definitions to promote basic understanding of the English language. And working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of both Kamloops British Columbia and Edmonton Alberta allowed me to develop and maintain a level of trust with my “little buddy” who I visited in school for one hour a week, making learning fun and exciting - this was their time away from the classroom to connect with someone they know and trust.
If you have done work internationally, where and in what capacity?
I am currently living in the United Kingdom. After recently becoming a newly qualified teacher in Scotland I am about to begin my teaching journey in England!
If you are willing to volunteer, in what area(s):
curriculum development, fund-raising, grant research/writing, internships, membership outreach, mentor teaching, organisational partnerships, researchers, TWB on Campus, workshop facilitation
How did you hear about us and a few words why you want to join EBB:
I heard about Teachers Without Borders early in my post secondary career, possibly through word of mouth but it was so long ago I couldn't say exactly where I heard about it. All I can say for sure is that the moment I heard about it I wanted to be a part of it! I hope to one day dedicate a year of my time in one of the many countries TWB currently works in. I am a dedicated newly qualified teacher in the UK who hopes to one day share the passion I have for learning and teaching with those less fortunate than myself. I have the love, support and encouragement of a loving partner who also wishes to share her warm and embracing personality with others to make a difference in their day to day lives. Together with a team of other dedicated individuals, we hope to spread some sunshine, make a difference - no matter how big or small, and share the value of an education with those children and adults who deserve one the most - that's EVERYONE!
