Skills & Interests
My professional goal is to design methods that will help people develop their independent learning, critical thinking and leadership skills, all of which ultimately determine our success in life and work.
Despite the importance of these skills our current policies in the UK appear to place a higher emphasis on the need to demonstrate compliance with league tables and competence assurance rather than reflecting on and improving the process of learning and leadership development.
I welcome contact with like-minded people who are passionate about collaborating with the aim to develop sustainable, practical and effective solutions that will address these kind of issues. I believe the status quo needs to be challenged, since current methods appear to be conditioning society not to think, there is evidence of a growing expectation that people need to be taught and trained in almost everything we do.
The methods I am learning about, designing and trialling are primarily based on experiential learning and include proven strategies such as Socratic enquiry, collaboration, active and student-centred learning.
I aim to achieve my goals through academic research, exchange of idea's and combining the skills I developed in my earlier careers in outdoor education, sail training and supervising multi-national ROV teams in the offshore oil & gas Industry.
Socrates is reputed to have said,
"I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think".
Out-with work I am a volunteer trustee of the Britannia Sailing Trust a 100 year old sailing ship I was captain of in my early 20's, our aim is to restore Britannia to enable her to continue providing individuals and diverse groups of people with life changing experiences through adventure holidays and leadership development.
If you have done work internationally, where and in what capacity?
I have worked in the Oil & gas Industry as a technical Supervisor in predominately west african countries. I worked for 6 years in Angola and worked hard to provide my national collegues with opportunities to develop their technical & team skills. Many had previously little access to technical education and were often unfairly treated by other expats. A year ago I changed career from offshore supervising to technical instructing and in the future I dream of returning to west africa to do some voluntary work in technical colleges to help (if required) the staff prpare their students for careers in industry. For futher information please view my linkedin profile.
How did you hear about us and a few words why you want to join EBB:
I heard about your organisation through linked in.
For many years I have been wanting to give something back to the west african countries I worked in.
I was becoming very frustrated working offshore as a Supervisor seeing many of my national collegues being held back from progressing in a technical job because they had lacked training in technical principles and skills.
I spent much time mentoring the angolan crew and had lobbied my then organisation to provide them with the type of training that would suit their needs.
I would be honourded to hajoin EBB.
Please view my linkedin profile for a better description of my skills and motivations, I also have a reference from two angolan collegues.
Kind Regards
Tim
