How To Pick the Right Dyslexia Tutor for Your Child

It is not uncommon for a child with dyslexia to need extra help in certain subjects. However, you never want to rush the process by hiring the first tutor you find. Use the following tips to pick the right dyslexia tutor for your child.

Check Your Budget

The first thing you want to do is check your budget to determine the steps for hiring a tutor for your child. You can do a quick search online to find the average dyslexic reading tuition for your state. This way, you can determine how much money needs to be set aside for your child's tutor.

Ask For Recommendations

If you find an online search for a dyslexia tutor to be overwhelming, you can always start by asking for recommendations. Talk to your child's teachers and pediatrician to find recommendations on a dyslexia tutor. You can also talk to other parents in the community to see if they know of any tutors who specialize in dyslexia.

Check Their Background

You also need to check the background of every tutor on your list. It is important to ensure they have the training and experience necessary to work with dyslexic students. In addition, you want to ensure they are good with students in your child's grade level and age range. The last thing you want is to hire a tutor who does not have the experience or patience needed for your child.

Schedule An Interview

Schedule an interview with tutors who fit the criteria to work with your child. You can even use a part of the interview to introduce your child to their potential tutor. This way, you can ensure this tutor is going to work out in advance. While it may take a bit for your child to warm up to their tutor, pay attention to immediate signs that your child is uncomfortable or frustrated with their tutor.

Read The Fact Sheet

You never want to hesitate to ask questions because this is someone who is working with your child. If you are unsure of what questions to ask each tutor, refer to the IDA fact sheet before scheduling any interviews. This sheet is known as "A Parent’s Guide to Effective Instruction," and it can give you an idea of what to ask each tutor during their job interview.

Ask For References

Be sure to ask for references from your child's potential tutor during the application process or interview. You need to talk to past students and their parents about the work ethic and overall attitude of your child's tutor. This gives you the opportunity to learn of any red flags or green flags that you may have missed during the interview.

If you keep the above tips in mind, you can easily find a tutor with experience in working with dyslexic students. Your child's education is important, but it is essential to take your time to ensure their tutor is right for them.
